Superphones
The phrase superphone has been around for a while now (several different sites report that it was first coined around 2006/ 2007) but it is only in 2010 where we have seen a range of handsets that stand head and shoulders over normal handsets and require the new nomenclature.
It was pushed to the fore in January this year as Google began marketing their Nexus One handset earlier this year and since then a rough set of guidelines has been established. Our perception of these are;
- - Large screens of 3.5 inches across the diagonal or more
- - Sophisticated display technology; AMOLED, Super AMOLED or Retina
- - High resolution displays of 480 x 320 or greater
- - 3G, 4G or WiFi connectivity
- - Full web-browsing and email capability
- - Touchscreen and/or QWERTY text input
- - 5MP or more camera capability
- - High definition video (30 fps, 720p etc)
- - Location awareness (GPS, aGPS)
- - Interactive OS that allows 3rd party application installation
- - Supporting application stores
